With Christmas just around the corner, many residents of Bay Head neighborhoods are thinking "out with the old, in with the new". Not everyone is familiar with Bay Head's Recycling Center & Public Works Garage (214 Park Ave.), so we thought we'd break it down and let people know what items can be recycled from your oceanfront Bay Head home(the center is open M-F from 7:15 am to 3:15 pm and Saturdays & Sundays from 8 am - 1:45 pm. It is closed on federal and state holidays).
Items Accepted At Bay Head Recycling Center
- Paper, bottles, and cans: Steel & aluminum cans, glass bottles & jars, plastic bottles with neck smaller than body, newspaper,office paper, magazines, books with hard covers removed. Please rinse your containers. All material must be loose (not bundled or bagged).
- Corrugated cardboard: Please flatten boxes. No pizza boxes, packing material, or non-corrugated cardboard.
- Brush: Branches, hedge clippings, limbs and vines are accepted. No construction lumber.
- Leaves: Leaves, pine needles, & non-woody plants. No grass clippings. Grass clippings should be disposed with regular household garbage.
- Scrap Metal & Appliances: Scrap items must be made mostly of metal. If an items is too big for you to bring to the recycling center, call Public Works (732) 899-6782 to arrange for transport. Air conditioners, fridges and dehumidifiers (regardless of condition) must be accompanied by a copy of a work receipt from a contractor stating all Freon has been removed from the appliance.
- Electronics: Computers, printers, monitors, TVs, stereo equipment, video equipment, telephones, speakers and wire are acceptable. Dispose of devices with Mercury as Hazardous Waste via the Ocean County hazardous waste collection day (in the spring and fall). Call 800-557-3292 for more information on hazardous waste items.
- Used Motor Oil: Ask attendant to unlock the storage tank.
- Car Tires & Light Truck Tires: Talk to the attendant before leaving your tires.
- Old Clothing: Should be cleaned and in bags.
- Plate & Mirror Glass: NOTE - Don't mix plate and mirror glass with other items. It is not recyclable, but can be brought to the recycling center for safe and proper disposal. Always see the attendant before leaving plate or mirror glass.
Items Not Specifically Listed Cannot Be Accepted
Some common items that get disposed of with household garbage and not be recycled include grass clippings, plastic shopping bags, plastic and aluminum food trays, plastic toys, buckets, cardboard juice and milk containers, flower pots and trays, automotive product containers, dishes, glasses, cups, packing material, pizza boxes, wax coated cardboard, shoe boxes, gift and cereal boxes.
Pick Up Service: Pick-up service is there for elderly and handicapped residents who can't make the trip to the recycling center. Call Public Works at (732) 899-6782 for more information.
Disposal of Other Material
Household Trash: Backyard garbage pick up is provided twice a week. Residents can leave a maximum of three regular-sized garbage cans, which will be emptied at each pickup. NOTE: Recyclables, bulk items and hazardous waste will NOT be picked up with garbage.
Bulk Items (furniture, construction garbage, etc.): Bulk material can be picked up for a fee by calling (732) 892-0636. Or save it for the spring and fall curbside pickup. Residents also have the option of taking it to the Ocean County Landfill in Manchester. Remember most metal items can be recycled.
Latex & Oil Paints: Your leftover paint and cans must be taken to the Point Pleasant Beach Recycling Center located at the rear of the Arnold Avenue train station parking lot. Stains and paint thinners should be disposed of as hazardous waste. The hours are M-F: 9 am - 2 pm.
Hazardous Materials
Hazardous materials include pool chemicals, stains, thinners, pesticides, herbicides, harsh cleaners, antifreeze, mercury-containing switches, thermometers and thermostats. You can safely stores these materials and they will be picked up on the next Ocean County hazardous waste collection day (in the spring and fall). Note materials that are radioactive, dioxins, infectious waste, explosives, construction waste and asbestos will not be picked up. Call (800) 557-3292 if you would like more information.
