Established back in 1851, the community that 25,000 year-round residents currently call home was named after General Garret D. Wall, who commanded the Trenton Volunteer Company in the War of 1812, stationed in Sandy Hook. He would go on to serve as both quartermaster for the state of New Jersey and as a U.S. senator.
Deep Ties to History
The original settlement in the area, Allaire Village, founded in 1822, has now been immortalized as a living museum in the expansive and similarly named Allaire State Park. The park also houses the historic Howell Iron Works, an old bog-iron refinery, owned and operated by park and historic village namesake, James P. Allaire. The Allaire family would gift the parklands to the state to allow the creation of the park.
The historic buildings remaining standing to this day include a general store, blacksmith shop, carpenter’s shop, manager’s house, foreman’s house, and a church. Aside from the historic village, the state park also features the Pine Creek Railroad, family campgrounds, and numerous hiking trails suitable for all fitness levels.
Gateway to the Jersey Shore
Wall Township is prized for its ideal location, set so close to the beautiful beaches along the Jersey Shore coastline. In fact, many of the Jersey Shore’s celebrated beach communities were once part of the township, including Belmar, Manasquan, Sea Girt, Brielle, and Spring Lake.
Not that Wall Township doesn’t have a lot to offer in its own right. The Wall Stadium Speedway has been host to many classes of exciting car racing since it first opened its doors back in 1950. The venue has been recently upgraded with new sound equipment, an expanded concession area, and a kids’ club featuring an RC car track! Proving to be incredibly popular in the local area, the annual Turkey Derby is a fantastic event taking place over several days in late November. Be sure to mark that date on your calendar!
