Shore Spotlight: Mantoloking, NJ

Shore Spotlight: Mantoloking, NJ

A true highlight of the Jersey Shore’s “Gold Coast”, along with neighboring Bay Head, Mantoloking oceanfront real estate is a quiet enclave in one of the fastest growing areas of New Jersey. As popular with visiting tourists as it is with the locals, its position close to New York City, Philadelphia, and Atlantic City ensures a steady stream in the warmer months.

Normally a sedate oceanside community of around 300 year-round residents, Mantoloking's numbers swell to over 5000 in the summertime. Visitors are drawn to the area for many of the same reasons locals have made a home here for so long - the quiet, small-town ambiance within easy reach of many of the Jersey Shore’s most revered highlights. This includes bustling boardwalks like those found in Seaside Heights and Point Pleasant Beach, as well as the stunning beaches just waiting to be discovered along both coasts of the Barnegat Peninsula.

Austere Beginnings

Mantoloking was incorporated in 1911. It was created from portions of neighboring Brick Township. The name of the seaside community is thought to come from the local aboriginal Unami language, meaning either “frog ground” or “sand place”.

Its amenities are stark, but residents and visitors prefer it that way. The majority of shopping and dining can be undertaken across the Mantoloking Bridge in nearby Point Pleasant Beach and Point Pleasant. Just like its neighbor to the north, Bay Head, Mantoloking doesn’t contain any schools. The majority of students attend elementary and high school across the Mantoloking Bridge.

Among the Shore’s Most Exclusive Areas

The community is made up of a collection of shingle-style and shore colonial-style homes that seem as if they’d be more at home in the New England communities further up the East Coast, in places like Cape Cod and Martha’s Vineyard. This architectural style is unique to the Gold Coast of the shore, and has spawned a successful home rental industry for those looking for a one-of-a-kind shore getaway.

Today, Mantoloking has distinguished itself as among the most exclusive communities along the Jersey Shore coastline. Its residents are the wealthiest in New Jersey, with a per capita income of nearly $115K. It’s credited as being the 15th highest income place in the entire United States.

Points of Interest

Mantoloking Beach – The community boasts an incredible beachfront. Miles and miles of sandy coastline stand ready to greet eager sun-seekers. Seasonal badges are available for $20 or $5 per day. The beach is relaxed and no frills, so don’t expect any of the bustling boardwalks or restaurants found elsewhere on the shore.

Mantoloking Yacht Club – This yacht club’s history dates back to before the founding of the community that surrounds it. The club is dedicated to its community as a truly family-focused institution. Its junior sailing program is extremely well regarded in the area, and has produced a number of highly successful athletes.
