Ask anyone who owns on Bridge Avenue or East Avenue when Bay Head feels most like itself, and you will get the same answer twice: the last three weekends before Labor Day. July belongs to the renters and the fireworks. August is when the town's own calendar tightens. The Fire Department's biggest fundraiser, the lantern gathering at Twilight Lake, the final farmers markets on Bridge Avenue, and the last mornings of beach yoga all stack inside a narrow window. If you live here and treat late August as the season winding down, you will miss most of it.

The 50th Clam Bake is the one to plan around
The Bay Head Fire Company's Annual Clam Bake has been a local institution for a while, but this year is the fiftieth. The 50th Annual Clam Bake runs Saturday, August 15, 2026, from 12 to 5 pm at 81 Bridge Ave, with clams, burgers, hot dogs, roast beef, fresh corn, live music, raffles, face painting, and craft beers on the lineup. A fiftieth anniversary tends to bring back the alumni crowd, which means the early afternoon window fills fast. If you have summer guests coming down that weekend, this is the event to build the day around and the reason to skip a Saturday reservation somewhere else.
A note on logistics if you have not been in a few years: Bridge Avenue parking is metered, resident-permitted for much of the length, and effectively unusable by mid-day on a Clam Bake Saturday. Walk from home if you can.
Glimmer of Hope, one Saturday earlier
The week before the Clam Bake, Twilight Lake gets quieter than it has been all summer. Glimmer of Hope falls on Saturday, August 8, with a rain date of Sunday, August 9, and works this way: attendees pre-purchase a floating paper lantern, personalize it with a hope, wish, or reflection, and set it afloat on Twilight Lake as a tribute or private moment. Lanterns are $10 and available at Manasquan Bank in Bay Head or at The Grenville.
It is a very Bay Head kind of evening. No stage, no vendors, no boardwalk noise. Neighbors bring folding chairs to the lake's edge and stay through dusk. If you have lived here through a hard year, this is the one to go to.
Buy the lantern in advance. The two pickup points close before the event, and the volunteers running the gathering do not stock extras at the water.
What Thursdays look like through September
The market has become a fixture without becoming a spectacle. The Bay Head Farmers Market runs Thursdays 12–4 pm from July through September, located on Bridge Ave in the municipal parking lot next to the Bay Head Firehouse. There are three Thursdays left after the Clam Bake weekend before the calendar rolls into September, and the produce hits its best window in exactly that stretch: late Jersey tomatoes, corn that no longer needs anything done to it, peaches while they last.
The market's real value for a resident is not the shopping. It is the fact that everyone you know walks through it between noon and three, which makes it the most efficient two hours of the week for catching up with neighbors you have not seen since June.
The morning rituals nobody puts on a calendar
Some of the best parts of an August week here are the standing ones. Beach Yoga meets on Johnson Street Beach Friday through Monday, 8 to 9 am, $10 per class, from Memorial Day weekend through Labor Day. Four mornings a week, and the crowd thins noticeably in the last two weeks of August as the summer renters clear out, which makes late August the best stretch of the season if you found the July mat count claustrophobic.
The Monday morning walking group is the other one. It meets Mondays at 7 am on Bridge Avenue, is free, and welcomes anyone whether they are a regular exerciser or just starting. A slower pace, roughly a forty-five-minute loop, and a good on-ramp back into a routine after Labor Day.
For water: Beach House Classic Boardshop at 517 Main Ave runs daily surf and paddleboard lessons and rentals 9 am to 5 pm, all summer, and can be reached at 732-714-8566. Late August is when the sandbars are at their most cooperative and the ocean water sits at its warmest reading of the year. If a family member has been meaning to try a paddleboard on the bay side, this is the two-week window.
Where to eat around the events
August dining plans here tend to collapse under two forces: the town gets busier on event weekends, and the shoulder places quietly start scaling back hours in preparation for the off-season. A few specifics worth knowing.
Mueller's Bakery, 80 Bridge Ave. Mueller's has been at it since 1890, still uses the original crumb cake formula, and stays open March through December. If you are hosting Clam Bake guests on Saturday morning, get in the line by 7:30. By 9 am on August 15 the case will be picked over. The crumb bun is the correct order; the crumb cake is the correct thing to bring somewhere.
Charlie's of Bay Head. Charlie's sits on Twilight Lake and runs lunch Monday and Wednesday through Saturday 11:30 am to 2:45 pm, Sunday brunch 11 am to 2:30 pm, and dinner every night starting at 5. The lake-side tables are the ones to ask for on a Glimmer of Hope weekend, since the same water you will be at that evening is the view from the deck.
Theresa's South, on Mount Street. Theresa's is BYOB, does not book private parties between May and early October, and directs guests to the municipal parking lot on Bridge Avenue with a short walking path over the bridge to Mount Street. A Saturday reservation the week of the Clam Bake is a hard get. A Tuesday or Wednesday is not.
What is worth walking past
If you are a year-round resident, you already know Bay Head does not offer the boardwalk experience two boroughs south. The town operates on different rules than most shore towns: no boardwalk, no arcades, minimal commercial development. That is the trade the town made a long time ago and re-makes every year. What August delivers instead is a small, dense calendar of gatherings that only work at this scale: a fire company that knows the fifty-year regulars by name, a lake that clears for a lantern night, a market where the tomatoes come from a farm you could drive to.
The last two weeks before Labor Day are not the season ending. They are the season at its most local.
